Arch Linux isn't an operating system. it's a Tamagotchi for IT nerds. You don't actually use your computer to do any real work. You just keep the OS alive. It is the life mission now because you refuse to go to therapy or let go that 20 years old Thinpad. You have to feed it `pacman -Syu` every day, massage its broken dependencies and pray the new kernel doesn't shatter your graphics drivers. It’s cute, but some of us actually need to open a python code or browser without checking a wiki first

Yup, Mint is cool and it made is way to be the "go-to" Linux destribution for beginners. Its influence is so big that, unfortunately, those who use it are considered as "second-class" Linux users by those who have been using Linux (and other unfriendly distros) for a while. Some people behave like childs.

That's why I use Fedora, a good balance between new and stability, for workstation, debian for servers, always.
I use Debian on my server and Fedora on my desktop. Fedora is a really good blend between stability and recent software. I haven't had any real issues with it for years.

Twenty years ago, more or less, after trying Gentoo for.... one week and being disappointed by Red Hat.
I recently switched from Mint to Fedora because Mint was taking money from a fascist youtuber,then to Debian because Fedora was welcoming to PISS slop. I got Debian to work how I want.
That's why I no longer use arch 😁 and gone back to stable gentoo.

never quite got the arch fever, been a Fedora user since idk, maybe 2016 and it's the perfect balance between bleeding edge and stability. If I wanna play with newer toys, I just go to rawhide

My experience with Arch is pretty much the same than yours. I tried Debian but botched it when trying to switch to unstable. I settled on Fedora where almost everything works without a fuss but I am pissed they welcome the slop. So I have yet to find my next hop distro.

Always. I started running Ubuntu full time on the 8.04 release. I experimented with debian testing around 2009, then on release locked it to stable, and eventually turned all my *buntu machines to debian stable.
Debian since 2001.
Tried Mandrake, Red Hat, etc, but Debian remained as the best choice for desktop and servers.
Around 2003 Knoppix was my portable system, because I didn't own a laptop.
Later (2007) switched to Kubuntu for desktop, but debloating every new installation.
Nowadays Debian remains as the best choice for servers, and Proxmox for virtualization.
This is funny because my Debian machine wasn't able to update the kernel today because of (I assume) outdated NVidia drivers...

I choose Debian-based distros for the predictable experience and stability. I don't have the time to be fixing issues with my OS all the time. I just want it to work so I can do other things.
I’m running my own custom images of Bazzite. Same with you maintaining Arch installs gets annoying with time… maybe ok if you only have one computer, but I have like 5-ish,

Surprisingly enough, I've been on the same CachyOS install for almost a year now and haven't had a single thing go wrong. I play FFXIV and some recent games, do a bit of scripting, and run VMs.
And the whole thing stays super stable for an Arch-based distro.

@ramou I am willing to exclude CachyOS out of this. CachyOS has such an active and wonderful community that I have gladly been a part of.
Then I look over to my Arch Linux using friend, not having done her assignments for 3 hours because she was tweaking her experience. Or fixing it whenever it decided it did not want to go on anymore, missing a whole day of work spend on caring for arch.
It seems to be her hobby and she works enough to compensate for it, but still 😭

After 15 years on Ubuntu/Xubuntu/Debian, I switched to Fedora Silverblue/Atomic two years ago—and never looked back. It felt like finally discovering Linux for the 21st century. 🤷🏻♂️

I actually had the opposite experience. Started out using Debian for a while, but my graphics and sound card never worked properly and took a _lot_ of tinkering to just get somewhat usable. It also often happened that when I wanted to use specific programs, the version in the repositories was so out of date, I couldn't use official documentation to get stuff working how I wanted. I switched to Arch, and it's basically hassle free.
I’ve noticed that people often confuse stability ( = doesn’t change) with reliability ( = doesn’t fail). These are two different software attributes.
From my experience having a stable system, like Ubuntu LTS, can leave you with stale bugs that were accepted and will never be fixed (I’m not going to say a word about Debian because I haven’t used it much). Personally, I choose reliability over stability, as I get irritated by bugs but I like new features. I suspect this is also the preference of majority of users.
OTOH, on rolling release distros you get bug fixes as quickly as any new features and as quickly as new bugs as well. The truth is that reliability doesn’t depend on the release model. It’s rather a matter of testing. Testing strategy may influence the release model yet it’s not a direct dependency.

both have their place. That's the beauty of distros, you can pick what works for you. No need to badmouth other people's choices.
I use Arch as my daily OS, I update once a week, I can't remember the last time I had to do anything manually, it works pretty reliably.
I used Debian for years before Arch, I switched because of KDE that was always out of date and I specifically choose Arch because I liked their wiki.
On my home server I still use Debian because I want to forget about it. They're different, but good in their own ways.

@ottona @domragusa Gonna have to join the happy Arch users' dogpile. Syu every now and then is all the maintenance I've had to do since I got the system set up. I didn't choose Arch specifically because it was rolling release, there are other reasons, but rolling release hasn't presented any problems in about 5 years of daily driving it.

@domragusa Same, I was always on LTS distros because of the fear of the above post but it's been 5 years now and I've used and maintained it the same way I've did with any distro beforehand, zero issues.
That said, it's only my personal anecdote. I'm aware that Arch had major breaking transitions in the past, some headache points, and esoteric software / driver users + AUR heavy users may naturally have more issues from time to time so I don't discount those experiences.

Yep. There's a reason why nobody uses Arch for servers or production workstations.
I use only one operating system at home, on my servers and at work: Debian Stable
you made me choke on my coffee, funny post. I agree. Running Debian on my personal laptop for many years, and since over 3 years also for work. Linux mint and fedora are also great.
I like CachyOS for normal use (main apps are Vivaldi, Rhythmbox, Shelly, LibreOffice) after 20+ years of Debian/Ubuntu based OS's. Today replaced the pacman.conf file by the latest github one after some experimenting with Parabola infusing.
maybe I'm doing something wrong but I haven't had any notable issues with Arch...
I few problems like network crashes etc. that remedy with `sudo pacman -Syu`; also I once managed to lock myself out somehow typing my password, although that was likely a PEBKAC issue 😅
I have been arch user for few years now. I do admit when I was new to arch, I found some things difficult. But I don't think arch is that unstable statement holds up now. It may be not as stable as Debian or other but is very much stable for bleeding edge. One does not need to update arch everyday, once a month or a quarter is enough.
This does not make sense of your writing, because I have been an #Arch #Linux user for 12 years and so far I have not had any problems due to the system. I use #Arch Linux on my work notebook, but I’m not IT. Arch linux gives me the most #freedom from all distributions so far! We probably live in different parallel "universes" and yours is not within my reach, nor do I want to be close.

This just seems ... really mean spirited and not like my experience with Arch at all. If you don't like Arch, that's cool, but can you not act like an asshole about it thank you.
I hear this sentiment a lot, but I don't get it. I've been using #ArchLinux as my daily driver for years now. Yes, it's true, I ‘feed it pacman -Syu’ every day, but that's really all I have to do — and honestly, if it was actually a big deal for me I would just automate this. I've never had to deal with broken dependencies, nor has a new kernel ever broken anything. There was one brief period were yay stopped working but I just reinstalled it, and it was fine.
Just to be fair, I don't do anything fancy with my computer — I pretty much just code and check my emails — so maybe if I were doing something more complicated then I would see problems. But used as a regular laptop I've found that Arch presents very few problems.
I've even been able to run a few games from #Steam in the past, without any issues, though I don't do that too often.
Maybe you have specific examples in mind?

I use both on different machines with different purposes. Arch breaks sometimes, but nothing like Ubuntu after an upgrade and I always find the fix in the wiki.

Ironically that's what using Ubuntu and Debian felt like before I switched to Arch. It always broke you never could just add some project from github as it required newer libraries. And when I run into software issues they almost always were fixed upstream 5 or 10 years ago.
But these days I'm at NixOS though.
@quidcumque Ok, someone has clearly never used arch in their life. Arch has been running stable with out intervetion except for pacman -Syu once per month for 6 yearsover here.
Swore by Arch for years, loved the ABS and the AUR, but when I built a home server the maintenance started to become more and more tiresome.
Replaced it with Ubuntu Server LTS a few years ago and haven't looked back ever since.
I also replaced it on my desktop with Bazzite, as I use it mostly for gaming, and connect to the server over ssh for work.
All irony aside, you're exaggerating wildly when it comes to regressions. I've been using it for four years now on several clients and I was honestly surprised that it doesn't show more regressions than Ubuntu LTS (which I used for 15 years prior).
Still, Arch and its hyped derivatives have no place in the hands of beginners.

It's the life mission now because the packages are too old to be relevant in 2026. You have to feed it 'flatpak this' and 'flatpak that' just to keep up with modern standards due to outdated repositories that conflict. It's cute, but some of us actually need to run modern python code or browse without checking a wiki first.

Maintaining Arch isn't that hard. I do it on my gamingPC without really even thinking about it. I am admittedly fairly technical, but it's not remotely as difficult or time consuming as you're describing it.

Sorry, but that's just utter nonsense. I've been running Arch for over 15 years. I've installed it twice in that time, once when I started, and once when I switched hardware. It's nice you're happy with Debian, I run it at work, it's also a good distribution in its space, but there is simply no need to shit on other people's work for engagement.
weird flex, but okay. You know most Fedora packages are like 2-5 days on average behind most Arch packages. So that bleeding edge arch kernel is the same kernel Fedora gets that same week too. weird flex mate, but you do you.
Been daily driving Arch for about 15 years now, and really it's not that difficult. I update it weekly, run vimdiff when a .pacnew file is generated and go to the webpage if something refuses to update (when there are breaking changes, the web will guide you on how to properly update). Yes, it's not a distro for everybody but neither is that terrible.

Curious; I set up Arch once on my Laptop and a few more times on my PC, and have been daily-driving without any issues since then (doing updates once a week)...
Arch Linux since 2012 on my main work machine. At the start there were some system changes which required manual intervention but really nothing since then. I only do a reinstall when I change hardware.
But for servers it's Debian, also home server and raspberry. 🍥 ❤
It's hard work, but someone has to do it 🤓
that's why I outsource my arch distro maintenance to Valve. 😉

it also deserves to note that SteamOS is based on Arch; it's a hugely popular distro that has arguably added a lot of Linux gamers to the Linux camp.

As a counter-anecdote, the whole time I used Arch it was 100% stable for me. (I left for other reasons.)
Have you actually used Arch? It really isn't that unstable. I'm not going to say it's perfect, but it absolutely is a lot more stable than you seem to think...
As for broken drivers/dependencies/etc, I've had that happen in Debian too. (Especially before Trixie. Trixie helped a lot with that thank goodness.)
To some extent, if you pick a rolling distro, you're expecting and preparing for potential issues to roll out, but they really don't break that much.
PS. If you just use pacman -syyu each time instead you're a whole lot less likely to have troubles. It's silly, but hey, what works works.
I haven't used mainline Arch since that was true. EndeavourOS has been my main for a couple years now, I really like it but the AUR issues are about to push me away.
gentoo linux here. Yes it’s a maintenance nightmare if you leave it for many months but I’ve been on it for years now and no problems. I find it to be my endgame as I’ve stopped distro hopping after I landed on it.
Using #CachyOS (based on Arch) for 6 months now and it's been really stable. I only chose it because it supports my T2/Intel Mac Mini out of the box but I really can't complain.
you’re not entirely wrong. My arch system is pretty stable but still. I’m going to switch back to a Debian flavor next.
I switched to cachyOS over a year ago, still has all the stuff I like about arch, but it's been a lot more stable than even linux mint was for me, and definitely much better than regular arch was.
I've been daily driving Arch for three years and use it for Gaming, Software Development, managing Servers and 'regular' use about 10 hours a day and it broke for me once. It wasn't even an Arch issue, just a Gnome extension that broke after upgrading Gnome. If you need to rely on Nvidia drivers I'd agree, but in my experience your statement is very exeggerated

I don't remember exactly, but it's been almost 20 years since I chose stability and went with Debian
@wariat Well, I saw it around this time on FreeBSD and... it was just as CDE on Solaris. It was OK, but fvwm2 was mich leaner on my 486DX2 66MHz. Then GNOME for years, but GNOME 3. So switched to KDE and the plasmoids were the king... KDE Neon gives you reasonable stable desktop, handles wine 32-bit for bogus retro apps (scope and EEPROM burners), handles both flatpacks and snaps, tooling for Atari ST with gcc and vasm... Themes that work, usefull desktop gadgets, Steam integration.
That is my 28th year with Linux on desktop 😀

Unfortunately, a standard, legal 5mW laser pointer will only temporarily overexpose a Flock camera.
To do any permanent damage, you would most likely need a high-powered laser (over 500mW?) and they're not easy to procure.

I tend to get in front of the thing and make a point of giving the camera the finger with both hands
@ApostateEnglishman unfortunately (at least in the US) there's zero problem purchasing wildly over powered laser pointers on eBay. (they're often mislabeled as class 2). It's terribly risky in regards to eyesight, but none of my business 😉

Geared tripod heads, high-magnification spotter scopes, and spotter scope mounts aren’t terribly expensive, but you get parallax over distance.
Dichroic mirrors and mounting systems to let you eliminate parallax are expensive, but then you can use a common CO2 bench laser.

you can purchase relatively cheap Astronomical Lasers. They are designed to be used with your telescope. They are hot enough that the beam feels warm to the touch and will permanently warp/scar the optical lens of most cameras. They remain effective for this purpose at a range of about 100m. They are also useful against CCTV lenses and of course extremely dangerous to pig eyes.

If you want to blast things with a laser "safely" you really do want to be very close. You wouldn't want to risk hitting bystanders.
And if you are that close already, I'd go with the tool I recommended in the past, not a laser.

Yeah! Climb the pole, unscrew the camera, cut the power cables, and then, while next to the pole, unscrew the camera's case so you can access the small orange/gold rectangle beneath the lens. Using a small screwdriver, pry up the filter plate in front of the sensor so that it exposes the gray silicon rectangle. Aim the nozzles of the paint can or your small brush at this rectangle then thoroughly cover the entire sensor with paint. With the proper paint thickness, the sensor will become resistant to even a quarter-second laser beam hit. Without this paint protection, the sensor would suffer irreversible damage after just a dozen or so milliseconds of exposure to a one watt coherent light source.
Don't forget to put the camera on the pole after you end to secure its sensor with painted substance.

Das würde die Abgeordneten dazu zwingen auch mal aufeinander einzugehen, statt verhärtete, ideologische Fronten aufzubauen, in denen ohnehin nur herumgebrüllt wird.

i think "tradional european values" is used by bigots as an euphemism for conservative christianism, but loose enough to include the ancient philosophers. That expression always pisses me off, first cos Albania is very much in europe but not christian. And then cos the enlightenment is thanks to the arab philosophers who kept copies of the ancient texts that the europeans had burnt down during the middle ages.
I would go even further: _translatio studii_ was and is powerful because it is always imperfect transmission. At each handoff we decide which parts of the old ways are useful or not.
I think it's because peasant's revolts rarely succeeded or caused actual change. Not that I'm opposed to dragging some nobles off of their horses and parading their heads through the streets, but we should remember that it may not solve our problems. Or at least it alone won't solve our problems.

It was partly a reaction to the demographic upheavals of the Black Death, but the plague happened a lot of other places with less resulting liberation of the peasantry.
Maybe because for decades a large segment of the academic left ceded most of the history and values that arose before the current century to conservatives, in favor of oikophobia and pomo deconstructionist nihilism.

There is an important issue here! They make the rule, but they don't tell you the story that made them think to make the rule. There is always a story. For example, at the university I used to work for, if you wanted to be reimbursed for travel, they said you had to submit the boarding passes. Clearly, someone had tried to get reimbursed for a trip they did not take. But at the time, Southwest COLLECTED the boarding passes, so no one who flew Southwest could be reimbursed. We took pictures of the passes. Sometimes that worked, sometimes not. Then it became possible to check in online and print the boarding pass. You could print two copies of the boarding pass. Or 100. This did not prove that you had boarded the plane, but it satisfied the rule.
The people who made the rule were staff who never got reimbursed for travel. They had no idea what problems they were creating, or that their rule did not accomplish what they intended.

It might be because Malaysian folk are increasingly rehoming stray cats, of which a portion of wildcat hybrids with the Asian leopard cat (basically a low foundation number Bengal) and whilst they can be good pets might be a bit wilder..

From what I gather, in addition to the normal electrolytes and such, cat urine is extra high in urea (as you could guess by smell) because their kidneys are very efficient, urea is hygroscopic, and moisture in the air breaks that down to ammonium which is conductive and quite corrosive.

#Google will cut off independent developers to #Android if they do not register with Google first. This will kill independent platforms like @fdroidorg and severely impede FLOSS devs from creating apps for Android.
Many KDE apps are deployed for Android: KDE Connect, Itinerary, Tokodon, and there's even a test version of Krita for Android.

It costs a missed opportunity to give more appropriate advice: stay away from google and use more private community forks of android that if I understand correctly will not be affected by googles papers please app ecosystem.
A strategy focusing on begging tech giants to not do the will of capital is basically lying to the public that there is a chance this can work.
In theory yes the open letter is a nice thing to have regardless of how google reacts because then we have something to point to how google is ignoring public opinion - but it needs to be presented with heavy caveats and we need to focus on getting average people out of googles grip so they don't hold this much power over us

Oh! We agree. That's what @plasmamobile is all about. However, realistically PlaMo is not ready for the general public yet, despite how hard we are working on it.
If we could get the sort of support regular Plasma has, the story would be VERY different. But PlaMo is still niche.

Not even remotely ready. I'd almost say its 10 years away but you need a foundation for it to run on. And the number of phones it can run on right now I can count on one hand. Which is not a good start. Classic chicken and the egg situation, sadly.
I would base phone purchasing decisions on it but bigger priorities are avoiding conflict materials and modularity so I will stick with fairphone until I find something better
@KellicTiger @ambiguous_yelp @plasmamobile Actually, even if it goes against the concept of user freedom, I'd prefer all the efforts going into making Linux solid for a handful of phones, instead of trying to adapt the OS to many different brands and models.
Even better, exclusively work on something like the PinePhone and make it the flagship of Linux phones. Perhaps the Linux Mobile would then finally really take off?

Very much both. Also finding more hardware support. In that respect, we must not forget about the great work the people at @postmarketOS are doing! They help us get PlaMo on to more phones, giving us more space in which to grow.

However, if we insist on using Android (forks), we're still impacted by Google's decisions. Sooner or later, these forks will be less and less of a valid option (cf. how google's changes to the Pixel 10 series were a pain for the Grapheneos team).
Even if this letter fails, we shouldn't simply stick our heads in sand and look away from these issues. As you mentioned, raising public awareness is critical. So is fighting against their control.
I expect hardware to become more locked down, this is what states and capital want. The best solution to that continues to be open source hardware and modular devices.
I believe this because open source hardware and modular devices create power at a grassroots level and invites tighter crackdowns from governments - but there is a political limit to how oppressive a regime can be and the more power we build for ourselves the more expensive it will be for them to stop us using unapproved apps which slows the whole oppressive system down

Think dune buggies which are bare-bones but can move around quickly. Bolt on accessories as needed. Perhaps bring the #Permacomputing crowd in? Framework Computer style?

Don't let Android devices become a closed operating system, I strongly oppose it!
@helloclippy Device availability is definitely a friction point, but when choosing a new device this should be a priority and I will defend that, for example fairphone which is modular and pays workers a fairer wage and minimises conflict materials is compatible with /e/os
I would say that /e/os would still be better than using googles android because at least you can do away with Google Play Services (the component granting google the power to censor apps) and it can probably be hardened post-install too.
I'm not saying everyone needs to get a new phone right now but the existence of friction points doesn't mean we are powerless and it doesn't mean the friction can't be reduced in time
As an anarchist basically I don't think we should rely on undemocratic institutions to solve our problems we should do everything we can right now at a grassroots level

Therefore I clearly agree that we need better open hardware devices and open source firmware and software.
A couple of projects are aiming at achieving exactly that (Linux phones, Pinenote), but they are far away from being a solid/daily-drive alternative to Android/iPhones, just think banking apps.
The issue is time though, as open projects take a lot of it, while big tech solutions are rolled out on a conveyor belt...
Maybe let's port lineage OS and Ubuntu touch to more devices and let Google stagnate like the pond it's become? 🤔
Not to be rude, but as an average user/developer what's the issue at stake here?

A lot of the time banking apps are just QoL features though, obviously ymmv especially globally, but in my experience you can get by using the bank website, debit card details and cash. Those who can live without banking apps in order to grow the linux mobile ecosystem: should do so

It does. Albeit, many end users will find it hard to install and with not as many features or the stability of Android.
We are working hard on it and it has come a long way, but it may not be the drop-in substitute many users will be looking for quite yet.

Panels are very cheap, but a decent charge controller and inverter isn't, and apparently inverters don't last forever - I've only had mine for a few years, so it's too early to tell how reliable they are.
Replacing inverters may be a "running cost" of the system if you have to use AC.
For that reason, I have been trying to find as many DC-powered products as possible, but it's quite hard to find non-IT appliances.
The only real DC kitchen devices you can get a fridges.
There are NO DC-powered cooking equipment.
The most powerful DC kettle I have found is 24V and 300W, which isn't great.
Everything else is just low power, small equipment.
Someone in the US is trying to make a battery-powered electric oven, so people can use them on 120V systems.
I bet it is phenomenally expensive!

Technology Connections Oh man, right-wing heat pump and dishwasher spaces must be in a wild tizzy this weekend. This is going to be worse than all of the people suddenly asking why Star Trek had to go and get all "woke".
This was amazingly well researched and put together, like most of your videos.
Hopefully this will get some people to understand the importance of moving on from fossil fuels many instances.
I came for the video and stayed for the amazing rallying cry during the latter part.

Just wanted to say, watched most of this video, absolutely loved it. Like I already knew most of this stuff, but even more than the bit of added detail, the way that you framed it, the explanation you gave, and the fact that you even said at the end "I'm saying this because this way convinces people."
...I am definitely going to be using this exact way of framing the issue way more often, probably with the added fact that acquiring oil has required a lot of warfare, so we are literally just asking that the money going into warfare and environmental response get put into long-term energy-security instead.

I do feel the need to comment on the section on photovoltaics recycling though.
I'm far from an expert on this, but I do have the privilege of research proposals in this field crossing my desk every now and then and having occasional contact with the wonderful people at Fraunhofer ISE, among others.
For everything except the aluminium frame, recycling is significantly complicated by the fact that the adhesive used is a resin which can't easily be molten/dissolved. Right now the state of the art is to just shred the glass with everything adhered to it and use it as concrete fill.
The one exception ist that there's a bit of a scramble to capture the silver contained in the solder of panels manufactured during the first boom years of photovoltaics which are starting to age out, but as I understand that comes at the cost of wasting the other materials.
Theres lots of cool research in this field: how to manufacture for recycling, how to melt the cells and electrolyze the impurities out if the silicon, etc.
But were still pretty far away from having anything like a circular economy for photovoltaics.

One thing I wanted to note, while ICE engines (not those guys 😂) burn fuel with near 100% efficiency, my understanding is a car motor actually loses something around 80% of that energy through heat, so it’s even WORSE.
I feel can't find the right words to formulate a comment that would express my sympathies towards you, your cause and your way or fighting for that cause, in an adequate way. I'll try anyway.

@chrismerkel Fair enough, and that's one of the other biggest issues with Peertube at the moment. But my understanding is, for many YouTube creators anyway, Ad revenue is a pretty small fraction of their income. Obviously I can't say much on that for Alec specifically.
Also the viewership is so low, I doubt it would even make much of a difference at the moment. Obviously that could change in the future but he could always stop uploading to Peertube, or find some other monetization strategy.
@techindepth27 @chrismerkel I'm sure youtube ads give some money, but if I remember correctly he has said in the past that most of the money comes from patreon memberships.

It’s the sort of thing 12-year-olds on a school tour can actually watch without cringing (and dying) inside.

@BalooUriza @balkonsolar no, the panels have a built-in inverter that only works as long as it detects a healthy grid supply. This was specificly designed as a safety measure to prevent backfeeding of disabled circuits.
They are also limited in power to ensure that they can't defeat circuit breakers in detecting overcurrent through house wiring.
(This toot only applies to the situation in Germany)
@BalooUriza @balkonsolar a grid tie inverter is synchronized to the grid and has to stop if the grid goes down, because otherwise it would loose sync and suddenly supply 100% of the load.
These imverters are designed to inject current in your home mains by using a voltage slightly higher than the grid, so it is consumed first.

I thought I was watching a solar panel video, which was surprisingly fantastic the whole way through. I have 1,740 watts on my sailboat that I live on, so I didn't need convincing, but I feel better knowing that my lithium bank is perfectly recyclable.
And then, the video "ended." I was Jack Nicholson-smiling for thirty straight minutes and had a hand ✊🏻 raised. I was just expecting to find out how photovoltaics were somehow just heat pumps like every other invention ever.

If #PeerTube wants creators like Alec on it, it has to get a lot easier to publish mirrors on PeerTube. (Also, it should be easier to "monetize", but that's a harder problem, for several reasons.)

@maruno I built my own 20kWh + 5kW off grid setup, batteries included, for about 2000 euros.
LFP cells cost about 40-100 per kWh, you just have to add a BMS, inverter and some cables.
The expensive part is people. Same goes for the panels; 5kw of panels is 500€, but getting them put on your roof and cabled and all that costs (sometimes tens of) thousands, because there aren't a lot of people who do it and they want a high profit margin.

@balkonsolar Tbf that is "subsidized" in the sense that you don't pay any VAT like you do on any other product in Germany. Still massively cheaper, even if you had to pay VAT (2400€, i.e. still half of the American counterpart).

@breizh uranium is neither renewable nor free to harvest at low operating costs. nuclear power is an uniquely insane upfront investment & constant operating expenses and a lot of societal operating expenses to safely store the nuclear waste. until such time it can be safely transmuted. That is also a huge investment to develop and scale that technology.
the last time nuclear power was built it was only possible because the cold war needed the technology to be dual use otherwise it would have just been building nukes to collect dust somewhere.

But don't forget the reality that the US is stuck in a two-party system. You basically have 3 options:
- Vote Republicans
- Vote Democrats
- Don't vote
Option 1 is obviously worst, no need to discuss that.
But not voting is still worse that voting for the Democrats. Don't let your vote go to waste. The rest of the world counts on you!
As someone from the rest of the world, specifically from a country with (way) more than 2 parties, I sincerely hope that someday the US will reform their system and get more than 2 parties too. But first you need to get rid of the current administration, asap.

The issue is under whose party's control you would be best able to support Palestinians, protest against DHS, and in general make your voice heard and organise resistance. And even though it's possible to organise resistance in a fascist dictatorship, it's much easier under a dysfunctional and comparatively mildly hostile government.
would you consider splitting some of that up to 30 second bites, each on one lie?
